As the temperature rises, we need to think of ways to stay safe and well in the heat.

Heatstroke (sometimes known as heat hyperpyrexia) can affect anyone, but factors including medication, pre-existing health conditions and the body’s natural deterioration process increase the risk of it occurring in those aged 65 or over.

It’s important to understand how the heat affects us, from how to keep your home cool during the extreme heat to what to wear.

Heatstroke symptoms:

Effects of heatstroke can vary in presentation, but common heatstroke symptoms in the include:

• Dizziness
• Disorientation
• Seizures
• Headaches
• Nausea/vomiting
• Loss of consciousness
• Fast, shallow breathing
• Not sweating
• Behavioural changes (agitation, confusion, frustration)

So, in the spirit of enjoying the sun safely, we’ve compiled a list of key tips to make sure you stay well during the hot weather!

Tip 1: If outside wear at least 30 SPF and keep to the shade where possible

Tip 2: Wear a hat with a strong brim or peak

Tip 3: Restrict physical activity

Tip 4: Keep sipping on water throughout the day

Tip 5: Opt for lighter meals

Tip 6: Keep curtains closed at home

Tip 7: Keep to the lower floors of your home (as heat rises)
